Privacy notice

Skill the Gap (skillthegap.com) is built and run by one person, not a company. This notice explains, in plain language, what information the site collects, why, how long it is kept, and the choices you have. We collect as little as possible and never sell your data.

What we collect

Your email address — to sign you in. We use passwordless one-time codes, so there are no passwords to store.
Your name and your chosen @handle — your handle is shown publicly on the leaderboard; your name appears on the certificates you earn.
Your learner category and language — to personalise your learning path.
Your lesson progress, XP and exam results — to track learning, issue certificates and rank the leaderboard.
A one-way hash of your IP address (never the raw IP), your country, and your browser type — only to prevent spam and abuse.
If you write to us: your name, the email or phone you provide, and your message.

Why we collect it

To create your account and sign you in securely.
To save your progress and give you free certificates.
To show the leaderboard.
To answer your messages.
To keep the site safe from bots and abuse.
To send essential emails — your login code, a welcome note, and replies to your messages.

We do not use your data for advertising, and we never sell or rent it to anyone.

Cookies

We use a single essential cookie (stg_sess) to keep you signed in. It is httpOnly and used only for login. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies. Your progress is also stored in your own browser so the site keeps working on slow connections.

How long we keep it

Login codes: deleted within 24 hours (each code expires in 10 minutes).
Sign-in sessions: up to 90 days, then they expire.
Contact messages: about 30 days.
Security logs (with hashed IP only): about 180 days.
Your account and progress: kept until you ask us to delete them.

Community feedback and ratings

If you write on the Community page, we keep your name, your message, your rating (if you gave one), and your verified account email (used so we can reply to you) — plus a one-way hash of your IP and a coarse location (country/region/city), only to prevent abuse.
Your email stays with your message for as long as the message is kept, including while it is featured on the board.
Feedback is deleted after 180 days, unless it is featured on the message board.
Delete your account and your feedback, ratings, and the email stored with them are erased along with it.

Who can see your data

We never sell your data.
A few trusted services help run the site and see only what they must: Cloudflare (delivers and protects the site), Google Workspace (sends our emails), Hostinger (hosts the server), and Ollama Cloud (powers the Lesson Helper — it receives only your question and the lesson text, never your account details).
We share information only if the law requires it.

Your rights

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account and data entirely. To make any request, email [email protected] and we will act on it. You can withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account.

Children

Skill the Gap is for everyone, including young learners. If you are under 18, please use the site with a parent or guardian involved. We collect only the minimum needed to run the lessons, and we do not profile or track children for advertising.

How we protect your data

All traffic is encrypted over HTTPS. We never store raw IP addresses — only one-way hashes. There are no passwords here; we sign you in with short-lived one-time codes. Access to the server is tightly limited, and backups are stored privately.

Changes to this notice

If this notice changes, we will update the date at the top and post the new version on this page.
