Two kinds of AI, like two kinds of recipes 🍲
Imagine a famous restaurant. A "closed" AI is like their secret recipe — you can taste the dish (use the AI through their app or website), but you never see what goes in it, and you must keep coming back to their kitchen. An "open" AI is like a recipe printed in a book: anyone can read it, cook it at home, and even tweak the spices. Both can be excellent. The difference is who controls it and whether you can run it yourself.

"Weights" are the brain, "licence" is the rulebook
An AI model learns by tuning millions of numbers called weights — that bundle of numbers IS the trained brain. When weights are published for download, people say the model is "open weight": you can run it on your own machine, offline, with no per-use fee. But "downloadable" is not the whole story. Each model also comes with a licence — a rulebook saying what you may legally do with it: personal use only, commercial use allowed, or limits on how big your business can be.

Why this matters for you 🛡️
Open models give you real freedoms: privacy (your data can stay on your own device), no lock-in (no single company can switch you off or hike prices), and cost (no per-message fee once it runs locally). Closed models often lead on raw quality and need zero setup. Most people end up using both: a powerful closed model for hard tasks, and a small open model for private, everyday, offline work. Knowing the trade-off lets you choose on purpose, not by accident.
